Soviet Stadiums
Probably the best way to kick off your trip to Lviv. We keep it local...
Football in Lviv has a long and fractured history. Ethno-national wars were waged across what is now Western Ukraine and borders redrawn. Opposing cultural identities transformed territory and the sport suffered immensely, but not irreversibly.
Clubs closed, teams were renamed; stadiums closed, reopened, then closed again; fans were left wondering what will come next. This being Ukraine, more wars and new borders came next.
However, Lviv football today is stronger than ever. War with Russia has made Ukraine and the Ukrainian people more indomitable than ever. Football in Lviv, meaning players, supporters and organizers, is de facto frontline resistance.
Stands of Heroes shows the world how the undying strength of the Ukrainian football family has shielded the EU and NATO from Russian terror since 2014, and continues to do so.
Many football lads from our local crews gave their lives defending their country, so before we move on to why you should really think about booking Soviet Stadiums, please take a moment to remember the heroes of Lviv's forever football community.
Soviet Stadiums visits the three most important stadia in Lviv, all of which have a fascinating history, one of which is home to FC Karpaty Lviv. In between and after pitchside walks, we call in at several suburban beer bars (local beer and craft beer).
Expect to experience a classic Soviet space known as the "Army Sports Club Stadium". Motorcycle speedway was hosted there in the 1960s and at different times since then until 2010. It was the temporary home of FC Lviv, some time rivals of FCKL, until 2023. If you want to know about how scandalous football in Ukraine can be, FC Lviv history is the perfect place to begin.
After a trip to the monumental Lviv Beer Factory (tastings included), a taxi to the city limits results in a second pitchside walk around the home of FC Rukh Lviv.
This second stadium on our road was built in 1897. It was the home of Spartak Lviv who were active in Soviet leagues between 1940 and the 1950s. If FC Rukh Lviv play at home when you're here in Lviv, this is where you'll watch the match.
Pitchside walk number three is at the traditional home of FC Karpaty Lviv, famous for being completely hidden - it's only visible from above. Think football pitch in a crater in a forest.
The stadium has held over 50,000 fans and is known for intensity and atmosphere. If FC Karpaty Lviv play at home when you're here in Lviv, this is where you'll watch the match.
If your travel date falls on a match day, we include a ticket to a Ukrainian Premier League game as above. We'll walk you to the stadium and guide you back to your accommodation in Lviv after the match.
Soviet Stadiums is real Lviv and led by a local football fan. We include pitchside walks, beer, and a match ticket if you'll be in Lviv on matchday.
